This beautiful house...

She's a-gettin' a face lift.  I'm so excited!

We moved into our house over 2 years ago, and I have to admit - I didn't even want to look at it based on the first picture shown on the realtor's website.
Ugh.  Looks to me like a haunted house.  However, my mom pointed out that it was just a picture, and in person, it in fact looks like it could be really nice.  After all - it's just a paint color, right?  {Add to that some terrifying bushes that the owners allowed to grow to tree-size across the front.}  So we called up our agent and scheduled a viewing.  We were really pleasantly surprised - beautiful arches and french doors, hardwood floors, and original paned windows.  It was all that "character" we love.

After one week of living there, the front looked like this {'scuse the bad pic - I think my mom took it on her iphone as she was driving by on our VERY busy road}.

Already so much better albeit a little dull, but still - those paint colors!  It's not as though I would likely see it on another person's house and think - yuck!  Maybe, but I doubt it.  It's just that it's not our taste at all.  Our town is actually pretty large, but it still has that small-town feel with a little center we can walk to with our favorite coffee shop and restaurant both owned by people who live right down the road.  We're constantly meeting new people, which we love, but as we describe which house we live in, I feel like it gives an inaccurate impression of us.

So finally {YAY!}, we've contracted with a painter.  They're scheduled to come and power wash the house in two weeks, and then they'll start scraping and painting!  We're going with a medium gray with white trim, black shutters and a glossy red door.  I don't want it to be too pale since all the houses immediately surrounding us are white and all of the houses in the new development behind us will be a pale gray or something similar.  Also, as I mentioned before, we're on a very busy road so the house will probably get dirty quickly.

So this is what we're thinking:

{Ok - just pretend it's our house and that there's a red door. For whatever reason, Benjamin Moore's Personal Color Viewer emails me the photo without the red door, but it says it's red in the details.  I think they're trying to make this difficult for me...  Well, it would be a true glossy red, not a burgundy or anything.}

The painter actually persuaded me on the red door; I'm a little apprehensive, but I figure it's easy enough to paint a red door black instead of the other way around.  And the black door is a bit serious from the looks of the pic above.  {I wanted to do a yellow door a la pics below, but J has nixed that idea.}

I cannot wait!  This is definitely one of the biggest decisions we've made on the house to date.  Until then, we'll be working on the nursery, and there have definitely been some changes with that as well - more on that later.

So funny that you thought it looked like a haunted house! I think your plan for the paint is going to look awesome!

Thanks, Amber! I just checked out your blog and it's awesome! And thanks on the paint comments - we're getting tree work done today so the painters can start their powerwashing next week. I'm so excited!
